Celebrating and encouraging talented communicators of the future is incredibly rewarding.

My colleagues Kate, Katie and I had a great evening celebrating the success of the latest crop of Teesside University students at their 2023 Journalism Awards

DTW sponsored this year’s Multimedia Journalist of the Year award, deservedly won by Roaa Elhag, who we’re looking forward to welcoming to #TeamDTW for some work experience in the coming weeks.

Roaa’s work is already making waves. Originally from Sudan, and with family who have only recently escaped the country to Egypt to avoid the ongoing conflict, she has been providing updates and insights into the situation in English and Arabic via her Twitter account. She now has over 36,000 followers and has been referenced by news outlets around the world as a source of accurate information and content.

I’m very confident that Roaa will go far and we look forward to being a part of her journey.

More broadly, partnerships like the one we have with Teesside University are key in helping develop the talented communicators of the future. The fact that we have five Teesside University graduates in our current team is a testament to its success.

Thanks for reading.
