The Brief

To devise and deliver a marketing and public relations plan that would:

  • Raise awareness of road safety
  • Educate road users and lead to changes in behaviour, and
  • Reduce casualties in the region.

Our Work

Over the past ten years, we have created and implemented many road safety campaigns aimed at safeguarding the most vulnerable road users across the North East.

Working with the RSGB NE team, we identified the most at-risk groups – young people, children, cyclists, possible drink and drug drivers, pedestrians, motorcyclists and at-work drivers.

We developed an overarching Look Out For Each Other brand and devised eye-catching and informative campaigns for each vulnerable road-user group, using a mix of social media, graphics, public and media relations, video, website, design and advertising to engage the audience and reduce collision rates.

For the 2023 Young Drivers campaign, we filmed local college performing arts students; for cyclists, we filmed with Durham University Cycling Club; and to help safeguard children we enlisted the support of schools across the region.

We used case studies, storytelling, clear messaging, statistics, media relations, and engaging, emotive graphics and video to highlight the impact of dangerous or careless behaviour on the roads and how just one mistake could change the lives of so many.

Results

Road casualty figures have shown a steady decrease over the past ten years. In 2022, there were 4,153 casualties on North East roads. This is 30% less than the average number of collisions from 2015 to 2019. It’s the lowest number of collisions in the North East since records began in 1979, excluding years that were impacted by the Covid-19 lockdowns.

RSGB NE has been positioned as the go-to expert in the region for all things relating to road safety.

Between 2021 and 2023, we achieved:

  • 14.8 million total media reach
  • 97 pieces of coverage
  • 100% positive coverage
  • over 90,000 social media engagements
